Clearer skin starts with Clarity
Updated: Sep 19
When it comes to improving our skin, most of us look for answers in products. We're constantly told that the latest ingredient is the key to clear skin, fewer breakouts, a stronger barrier, or a glowing complexion. One week it's niacinamide, the next it's azelaic acid, and before long we're left with a bathroom shelf full of products and no real understanding of what our skin actually needs or how to use the thousands of products we have.
The skincare industry often encourages us to think in ingredients:
"What ingredient do I need for acne?"
"What's best for anti-ageing?"
"What will get rid of my pigmentation?"
But before asking what product or ingredient to use, there's a more important question to ask yourself and to figure out the answer to:
What is your skin actually trying to tell you?
One thing to understand with skin, is that even the most effective ingredient or product won't give you the results you're looking for if it's solving the wrong problem. Better skin rarely starts with a product, it may end there, but it really doesn't start there. There's no sugar coating it, sometimes it can take time to work this out - im still doing this daily. Your skin is your largest organ and the way it acts and responds can constantly change due to so many different factors. You could have your routine nailed for months and all of a sudden, your skin changes and decides something in your routine needs to change too. By arming yourself with a level of understanding and knowledge, you'll be able to learn to listen to your skin, understanding what its telling you and build your routine with clarity.
It starts with understanding your skin.
Why understanding your skin matters
Your skin is your body's largest organ, and its primary role is protection. Every day it's working to defend you from environmental stressors, bacteria, pollution, UV exposure, and moisture loss.
Like any other organ, your skin communicates when something isn't quite right. Dryness, tightness, redness, breakouts, sensitivity, excess oil, and dullness aren't random. They're often signs that your skin is responding to something, whether that's happening on the surface or deeper within the body. The more we understand those signals, the better decisions we can make about how to care for our skin.
Hopefully, this blog helps you to understand the science behind skin a little bit more, what to look out for when your skin is trying to tell you something isnt quite right and in turn what to chose to put on it.
Ingredients absolutely matter and we'll cover those too. But ingredients should be the solution, not the starting point. Before investing in a new active ingredient, there are a whole host of things to understand about your skin. When you understand the problem, or the element you want to improve and why, choosing an ingredient becomes much easier. Without that understanding, skincare often becomes a cycle of trial and error.
When you understand your skin, you're no longer chasing trends, you're making decisions based on what your skin is telling you it needs.
Clearer skin starts with Clarity.
